Pima County Board of Supervisors declares April 12-18 “Cyclovia Tucson Week”

PROCLAMATION

WHEREAS, cyclovias throughout the world have proven to be popular and fun events that temporarily close city streets to motorized traffic and encourage people to walk, bicycle, run, rollerblade and have fun safely in streets free of cars and trucks; and

WHEREAS, a committee with representatives of local governments, local businesses, non-profit agencies and interested citizens has spent several months planning for the first Cyclovia (see kló via) Tucson as part of the City of Tucson’s annual Bikefest, which celebrates bicycles and the bicycle as a transportation mode and includes activities to increase community participation in and awareness of bicycling; and

WHEREAS, Cyclovia Tucson’s mission is to celebrate the health and livability of the greater Tucson region; and

WHEREAS, Cyclovia Tucson will provide a unique and sociable fun experience for local residents, will be a free public event, will promote the awareness of cycling, walking and using other non-motorized means of travel on public streets, will increase neighborhood mobility, and will promote healthy local lifestyles; and

WHEREAS, Cyclovia Tucson will take place on Sunday, April 18, 2010 along five miles of central Tucson streets from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., bringing people together for a fun communal experience,

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Pima County Board of Supervisors hereby declares the week of April 12 to April 18, 2010 to be:

“CYCLOVIA TUCSON WEEK”

and encourages all Pima County residents to join the fun of participating in this event and to promote cycling, walking, and engaging in other healthy streetscape activities.
