National Poetry Month + Cyclovia Tucson

For the first time ever, Living Streets Alliance, the organization home to Cyclovia Tucson, is partnering with local literacy and poetry organizations, including the University of Arizona’s Poetry Center, Urban Poetry Pollinators, Tucson Poet Laureate TC Tolbert, Stories that Soar, Bookman’s, Tucson Youth Poetry Slam, and the Arts Foundation for Southern Arizona to co-celebrate National Poetry Month as part of the next Cyclovia Tucson event on Sunday, April 7th from 9am to 3pm.

The three-mile long route, which includes a stop at the University of Arizona’s Poetry Center, will be packed with events and activities all aimed at achieving a singular goal: all 40,000 people expected to attend Cyclovia Tucson will experience poetry in some way. Whether that experience includes reading chalked poetry on the street, creating bike-haikus (bi-kus) with poets, listening to poetry as spoken word or amplified from behind a roving poetry-equipped audio bicycle, to screen printing your own poetry refrigerator magnet-style onto t-shirts, to experiencing the great Hall of Giants at the Poetry Center celebrating the lives and works of poetry greats, to sampling Emily Dickinson’s personal gingerbread recipe, is up to each individual but all of these activities and so many more will line the route.

Information about the event including how to participate can be found at or on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter @CycloviaTucson, or by calling 520-261-8777. Cyclovia Tucson is presented by Banner—University Medicine with support from the City of Tucson, Cigna, the University of Arizona Poetry Center and the Pima County Clean Air Program. It is a free, public event and while many people ride bicycles, participants can also walk, skate, use wheelchairs, push strollers, and use any non-motorized form of transportation they wish to slow down, take in the sights, and experience the city from a new perspective, outside of car. Cyclovia Tucson is a biannual event that moves the route around to different parts of the city, bringing the experience to people’s doorsteps.
