Mr. Flewelling’s 8th grade class signed on to take care of designing the Tour de 4th Ave Sticker. 30 students, 1 iPad, and a couple weeks later, the collaboration and results morphed into something unexpected.

We meet outside with blue skies and students running around on the fields at the edge of 22nd st. The sun shines on this pleasant fall Tuesday morning. First, we find Mr. Flewelling, guide, consultant, teacher, of this creative endeavor. He peers out of his sunglasses to point out the handful of students that played a major role in the production of this funky, drippy, and honest design.

Excitement and restlessness fills the air for these students looking to enjoy their last year of middle school and make the most of their time. Including this morning’s recess. I keep my questions brief.

We talk about inspiration and lessons learned from this collaborative project with fellow classmates. There’s a lot about crocs, skateboarding, and the Tiki hut that made it into the design. The students share that they had a better sense for the colors and general feel of 4th Ave, making sure to include a drippy, melting vibe into the aesthetic with colors inspired by the Colombian flag and emo rainbow.

Tour de 4th Ave sticker design includes the SunTran Streetcar coming out of a blazing red sun on the horizon. Colors include the red, blue, and yellow of the Colombian flag and colors from the emo rainbow. The Tiki Hut head on 4th Ave seems to be eating a cherry dipped cone from Dairy Queen.

These students are joining all of the activities before heading on to Tucson High or University High. Some sure, some undecided about where they will go. Their takeaway from the project includes greater appreciation for the collaborative, creative process of group work as well as appreciation for the colors and features of 4th Ave.

Cyclovia Tucson really values the insights that come from neighbors and young people when they share about their streets that they use for play, living, or working. Long live the cherry dipped cone.
